Macerate the Oils

When the oils are newly mixed their silage is low. Silage is developed AFTER maceration, not immediately on mixing the oils with alcohol. Fragrance oils need to be macerated in alcohol for 4-7 weeks, the longer the better. Keep them in dark and away from heat; do not keep in cold. Normal room temperature is preferred. Use Denaturated Alcohol, 99.9% Ethanol, TSDA-1.

If you prefer to enhance and bring out a specific aspect of the scent tree, add fixatives. Fixatives will increase silage. Be careful not to add too much or this can easily ruin the fragrance several weeks after maceration.

The perfume bottles should, preferrably, be turned one turn daily, or at least a few times per week to allow the oil and alcohol to gentle blend [do not shake the bottles].

Oils to Pefumes

Add the fragrance oil to alcohol to observe how the scent develops. For example, a 100ml eau de perfume would contain 20-30%% of fragrance oil to alcohol. General recommendation is:

Parfum: 26-30%
Eau de Parfum: 15–25%
Eau de Toilette: 8–12%
Eau de Cologne: 3–5%

Further Preparations

Depending on desired outcome, fixatives can be added to the fragrance oils to enhance specific fragrance notes or sillage, a common practice in perfumery. Process cautiously with fixatives, keeping it at a low 2-5%, since too much can ruin the structure of the fragrance several weeks after maceration.

You can either use our standard fixative with your perfumes, or design a tailored fixative that focus on specific aspects of the perfume notes (i.e. opening burst, bring forth base notes, increase top notes, etc.).
